Fight Re-Cap for the Paul Williams Vs. Erislandy Lara Bout
Chris Arreola Vs. Friday Ahunanya 10 Round Heavyweight Bout The fight between Chris Arreola and Friday Ahunanya shaped up to be a good one. Arreola in his new found frame looked light on his feet as he came out aggressive and pursuing the win. The two heavyweights exchanged punches in bunches and did everything in their power to KO their opponent. There were uppercuts, vicious double left hooks (from Arreola), and an unseen uppercut- right hook combination from Friday Ahunanya that almost upset Saturday nights fight. The fight ended going the full 10 rounds with Arreola winning by unanimous decision. Both fighters were game heavyweights and put on an entertaining show for the fans in the Atlantic City BoardWalk Hall in New Jersey.
Akifumi Shimoda Vs. Rico Ramos 12 Round WBA Super Bantamweight Title Seeing Ramos fight on the under card of Chambers vs. Rossi, i must say that my expectation was minimal to none. Though talented, Ramos has been known to be a slow starter with just above average punching power. To my surprise, this fight ended up being the fight of the night! The fight between Ramos and Shimoda was for the WBA Super Bantamweight title at the agreed weight of 122lbs. The fight started off rather slow with Ramos being timidly careful and Shimoda being extremely wild and aggressive. Shimoda continuously hailed wild looping punches from his southpaw stance as Ramos circled right (the wrong way against southpaws) and continuously landed right hands to the body. After falling behind on all judges score cards, Ramos was able to land a devastating left hook in the 6th round that sent Shimoda stumbling back to Tokyo. Shimoda struggled back to his feet but was unable to get his bearings together and continue. The fight ended with an exasperated crowd and a newly crowned WBA Super Bantamweight Champion! (Rico Ramos)
Paul Williams Vs. Erislandy Lara 12 Round Jr. Middleweight Bout The Williams vs. Lara fight was the main event of the night and far from just that. Let me start by saying one word, Robbery! Williams came out in the first round aggressive and looking to eagerly re-establish himself in the world of boxing. He came out in signature Paul Williams style walking his opponent down and crouching down into the smaller fighters punching range. I always found Williams style odd, being that he is a fighter with such an obvious advantage in reach and height and never uses it. I also found it odd that he didn't seem to learn his lesson after getting hit with looping punches by Martinez from doing exactly the same thing. Lara, who came to fight, seem to take a couple of pages from Martinez's book. He was engaging, slick, and countered with looping punches that seemed to particularly find the left side of Williams' face. After the twelfth and final round Williams edged out an unfavorable decision with the final score cards reading 114-114, 114-116 and 99-104 Williams. With boos from the crowd and an unsatisfying showing by Williams, many of the nights fans sided with Lara as the winner. Compliments to ErisLandy Lara for a hard fought fight and a victory in most fans eyes!
